Moving Past "AI as a Helper"
I just shared a thought on LinkedIn about what "actually adapting" to AI looks like. For me, the last year has been defined by a single, uncomfortable shift: moving past "AI as a helper" and into actually building and wiring systems.
The "Helper" Trap
Most people use AI as a sophisticated intern—you ask a question, it gives an answer. You give it a task, it gives you a draft. This is useful, but it’s surface-level. It doesn't change the structure of how you work; it just speeds up the existing friction.
The "Wiring" Reality
The "wiring" phase started when I stopped asking AI to do things for me and started building the infrastructure for it to work with me. This is where the friction got real.
In my own AgentOS, this meant moving away from generic prompts and into:
- Decision Logic: Building a Decision Matrix to determine which "agent type" (Action-first vs. Knowledge-first) should handle a specific signal.
- Tool Handoffs: Codifying an AI Handoff Protocol so the system knows exactly when I’m saying "you handle this" versus "help me think about this."
- Master Instructions: Creating Master Instructions that define my cognitive signatures, ensuring the AI respects my verbal processing style and need for "orientation before detail."
Why the Friction is the Point
Building these systems is harder than just using ChatGPT. It requires you to actually understand your own Cognitive Signatures and the technical "plumbing" of the tools you're using.
But this friction is the only way to move from conceptual leadership to actual systems translation. If you aren't wiring the tools together, you aren't building—you're just talking.
